In this video, I’m going to discuss taking heart medications on keto—is keto safe? The first thing I want to note is that what I talk about is not meant to substitute your medical care. It’s mainly meant to be used for more research with you and your medical doctor. Most people that are on heart medication are either on: • Cholesterol meds (statins) • High blood pressure meds (diuretics) • Anti-clotting meds (warfarin, aspirin) What causes high cholesterol and LDL? - High insulin. What causes high blood pressure? - High insulin. What causes clotting? - High insulin. It all goes back to high insulin—too much insulin in the blood. Intermittent fasting and keto (ketogenic diet) will help lower insulin, cholesterol, and decrease the risk of stroke and cardiovascular accidents. Healthy keto and intermittent fasting are especially beneficial for heart health. The heart muscle doesn’t have a glycogen reserve. It doesn’t store sugar as muscle tissue does. The heart actually prefers to run on ketones and fatty acids. In fact, 85% of the fuel for the heart is fatty acids. Hopefully, your goal is to eventually wean off of heart medications with the help of your doctors. But, you need a long-term plan to get at the root of the problem.
