This arousal than triggers several local nerve cells in the penis, as well as in the brain. Leading to the release of multiple chemical messengers, like nitric oxide and cGMP. These cause the smooth muscles in your penis to relax and cause the blood vessels in your penis to open completely. This allows blood to flow in, building up pressure, making the penis expand. This pressure blocks the veins of the penis, ultimately creating an erection. How is erectile dysfunction caused? - A possible cause can be a problem of the nerve cells in your penis or in your brain. If these don’t function well, the necessary release of chemicals may not occur. - Another cause could be a problem with the blood flow to your penis. This can be caused by several heart diseases or by severe damage to your blood vessels. - Furthermore, damage to the erectile tissue of your penis, could prevent future erections. - Lastly, your mental state plays a key role in your arousal and the forming of an erection. Therefore erectile dysfunction could be caused by stress, relationship problems, a low self esteem, a depression and multiple other mental health conditions. When should you visit your doctor? - Usually, this is recommended if you have any concerns about your erection or if you are experiencing other sexual problems. - If you have diabetes, a heart disease or an other known health condition which might be linked to erectile dysfunction, it could also be wise to contact your doctor. Tips and tricks: One of the best ways to prevent erectile dysfunction is by making healthy lifestyle choices. - Therefore work with your doctor to manage diabetes, heart disease or other chronic health conditions if you are dealing with those. - Stop smoking, if you are, limit or avoid alcohol, and don't use illegal drugs. Those often have a huge impact on your blood vessels and your nerve systems. - Exercise regularly, at least 2,5 hours each week. Have a healthy diet and sleep 7-9 hours each night. - Take steps to reduce stress, possible by implementing meditation and visiting friend and family regularly. - If needed get help for anxiety, depression or other mental health concerns. Treatment of erectile dysfunction: Unsurprisingly the treatment for ED depends on the underlying cause. It is important to take care of your heart, vascular and mental health. Other, more direct treatment options are the usage of phosphodiesterase type-5 inhibitors. This increase the blood flow to you penis. Common options are Viagra, Cialis, Levitra and Stendra. With the first two being the most popular option. Other possible treatment options could be Testosterone Therapy (when low testosterone is detected in blood testing) or penile injections with Alprostadil. Beside medication, you could also try vacuum erection devices. These take some practice, but in 75 out of 100 men they can lead to an erection for 30 minutes. The last options, also the most invasive ones, are surgical treatment options. The main surgical treatment for ED is insertion of a penile implant; a semi rigid Implant and an inflatable implant. Both have a high rate of success and satisfaction, allowing for spontaneous intimacy. These generally cause no change to a man's orgasm’s. - Disclaimer: this video and the comments are meant purely informational! This is not medical advice!
